About The Position

The Special Events Associate II (Part Time) role involves supporting the planning, design, and execution of museum events. This position requires a flexible schedule, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to manage event operations, including staff training, guest assistance, and emergency response. The associate will contribute to creating a safe and engaging environment for all attendees while upholding museum policies and mission.

Requirements

  • 3+ years’ experience in event operations
  • 5+ years’ customer service experience
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Willingness to be lead for an event shift and or zone captain.
  • Works well independently, with keen observation skills and desire to be proactive about visitor needs and guest environment.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies with provided training.
  • Available to work a mix of daytime, evenings, and weekends. Events are on an inconsistent schedule from one per month to many evenings in a row. Shifts range from 2-8 hours.
  • Capable of working outside in changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to move materials up to 20 lbs. and assist team with setup and breakdown of events.
  • Ability to travel long distances across campus on varying terrain.
  • Able and willing to embrace Museum mission of “sparking curiosity and respect for nature and science”
  • Valid US driver’s license

  • 2+ years working in Special Events at the Museum of Life and Science
  • Bilingual (Spanish-speaking)

Responsibilities

  • Work a flexible weekly schedule ranging from 10-25 hours depending on event needs.
  • Assist in planning and design of upcoming events through brainstorming, material prep and emergency training.
  • Serve as operations lead on assigned daytime events and Zone Captain for assigned evening events, including staff shift training, volunteer greeting and placement, guest redirection, and initial deescalation.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all event attendees by anticipating guest needs and being knowledgeable about the Museum facility, policies, exhibits, and events.
  • Support the set-up of events including but not limited to tables and chairs, assisting with decorations as needed and providing entrance into Museum facilities for volunteers and vendors.
  • Maintain a warm, friendly, safe Museum environment while checking in ticketholders, guiding visitors through activities, monitoring Museum exhibits and spaces, and ensuring compliance with NC ABC Laws, Durham County smoking ordinance, and applicable Museum policies.
  • Support the clean-up of events, including removing trash and recycling, resetting exhibits, breaking down tables and chairs, and ensuring guests and vendors leave the facility as they found it.
  • Follow Museum procedures for emergencies by acting as or assisting the Emergency Coordinator and other Museum staff in emergency situations.
  • Support the Special Events team with other duties as needed.
