Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning and behavioral needs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a school or special education environment
  • Paraprofessional certification or college coursework in education or a related field
  • Experience supporting students with behavioral, emotional, or sensory needs
  • Training in CPI, de-escalation, or behavior management strategies

Responsibilities

  • Work one-on-one or in small groups to help students with academic tasks and skill development
  • Reinforce lessons and activities led by the special education teacher
  • Assist with differentiated instruction and adapted learning materials
  • Provide tutoring support in reading, writing, math, or functional life skills
  • Support the implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and positive behavior strategies
  • Assist with classroom routines, transitions, and supervision
  • Use trauma-informed practices and de-escalation techniques when needed
  • Help maintain a safe, structured, and encouraging learning environment
  • Assist teachers in implementing student accommodations and modifications outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Help collect data related to student progress on academic or behavioral goals
  • Encourage independence, social skills, and self-regulation among students
  • Follow lesson plans and classroom procedures during staff absences
  • Support classroom continuity and maintain established routines
  • Communicate observations or concerns to supervising staff
  • Assist students with mobility, feeding, hygiene, or toileting as required by their IEP
  • Support the use of assistive technology or adaptive equipment
  • Maintain student dignity, privacy, and safety at all times
