The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves assisting students in developing independence, carrying out lessons, adapting academic programming, and managing behavior plans. The assistant also helps maintain the classroom environment, assists with clerical tasks, and supervises students during various activities, including those off school property. Data monitoring, participation in team meetings, and maintaining confidentiality are key aspects of the role. The assistant must be proficient in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques, including de-escalation and therapeutic restraint, and must maintain current certification. They will also provide for the special needs of individual students, including physical assistance if necessary.
