The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves assisting students in developing independence, carrying out lessons, adapting academic programming, and managing behavior plans. The assistant also helps maintain the classroom environment, assists with clerical tasks, and monitors student needs and behaviors throughout the school day, including during lunch and transitions between classes. They are responsible for reporting unusual student behaviors, maintaining confidentiality, and utilizing Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques when necessary. The role may also involve providing programs for students off school property, such as field trips and vocational activities, and recording data on academic and behavior programming. Participation in staff meetings and other assigned duties are also part of the role.
