The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves assisting students in developing independence, carrying out lessons, adapting academic programming, and following behavioral plans. The assistant helps maintain a conducive learning environment, assists with clerical tasks, and promotes responsible behaviors and social interactions. They are responsible for maintaining classroom routines, providing programs for students off school property, recording data, and participating in team meetings. The role also includes monitoring student needs and behaviors throughout the school day, reporting unusual behaviors, maintaining confidentiality, and utilizing Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques when necessary. Additionally, the assistant provides for the special needs of individual students, including lifting, hygiene, medical, and restroom assistance.
