The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves providing assistance to students to help develop their independence, carrying out lessons as arranged by the teacher, and adapting academic programming. The assistant will follow individual behavioral plans, assist in maintaining a functional classroom environment, and support the special education teacher in various clerical and preparatory tasks. They will promote responsible behaviors and social interactions, maintain classroom routines in the teacher's absence, and may provide programs for students off school property. Data monitoring, participation in team meetings, and reporting unusual student behaviors are also key aspects of the role. The assistant must maintain confidentiality and use Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques, including de-escalation and therapeutic restraint, when necessary. They will also provide for the special needs of individual students, including lifting, hygiene, medical, and restroom assistance.
