About The Position

The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for creating and maintaining healthy relationships with students, writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). This role requires an understanding of the continuum of skills needed for community and independent living, flexibility, high motivation, and enthusiasm when working with learners. The teacher will also demonstrate an understanding of Professional Learning Community (PLC) elements and apply them in a team setting. A commitment to differentiating instruction and meeting the needs of diverse learners, including all special populations, is essential, aligning with the Waukee Framework for Meeting the Needs of All Students. Experience with multiple teaching methods such as co-teaching, collaboration, whole/small group, and individualized instruction is expected. The position also involves participation in secondary-level professional development, maintaining accurate records, and providing timely feedback.

Requirements

  • Valid State of Iowa teaching license, required.
  • Understand understands function of behavior and ability to implement behavior intervention plans.
  • Successful secondary special education teaching experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Instructional Strategist II (ID) endorsement, preferred.
  • Instructional Strategist I or Instructional Strategist II (BD/LD) acceptable, willingness to obtain Class B Instructional Strategist II (ID) endorsement.
  • Experience with Level II/III students highly preferred.
  • Previous classroom teaching experience at the 6th-8th grade levels, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate flexibility, high levels of motivation and enthusiasm when working with high school learners.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) and apply that understanding to a team situation.
  • Understand and apply in professional practice the Waukee Framework for Meeting the Needs of All Students, highlighted by a commitment to: differentiating instruction for learners, meeting the needs of diverse learners, including all special populations.
  • Understand and experience in using multiple teaching methods: co-teaching, collaborating, whole/small group and individualized instruction.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth and development as described in the Iowa Professional Development Standards and support of the Iowa Teaching Standards as the foundation from which to build that ongoing growth plan.
  • Articulate oral and written communications.
  • Maintain accurate and timely grades and provide measurable and adequate feedback on student work.
  • Participate in secondary-level professional development.
