About The Position

Vanderheyden Hall Inc. is seeking a Special Education Teacher committed to the Sanctuary Model, a blueprint for clinical and organizational change that promotes safety and recovery from adversity through the active creation of a trauma-informed community. This role focuses on delivering primary instruction to students, preparing lesson plans aligned with New York State Standards, and evaluating instructional materials. The teacher will maintain and follow Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behavioral Support Plans (BSPs), create a safe learning environment, and assess program outcomes. Responsibilities also include assigning tasks to teacher aides, participating in school meetings, managing classroom resources, and cultivating productive relationships with staff and students. The position requires a commitment to the agency's mission and a willingness to respond to the needs of a diverse population in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree required.
New York State Teacher certification in special education.
Experience teaching Math grades 7-12.

Nice To Haves

Master's degree preferred.
Experience with at-risk youth and/or youth with special education needs preferred.

Responsibilities

Deliver the primary instruction to students as scheduled.
Prepare lesson plans and instructional material based on the New York State Standards.
Evaluate and recommend instructional material.
Evaluate and record academic progress of each student.
Maintain and follow the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each classified student.
Maintain and follow the Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) for each student.
Create and maintain a safe learning environment within the classroom.
Assess and record program outcomes on the agency database.
Assign tasks and monitor the performance of the teacher aide.
Assume other responsibilities that belong to all education staff members such as participation in the behavior management program, ensuring the health, safety, and supervision of students, and enforcing the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
Initiate communication and consultation with other staff in response to student concerns.
Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with all agency staff.
Develop supportive and nurturing relationships with students while consistently reinforcing program expectations.
Participate fully and effectively in school meetings or teams including Committee on Special Education meetings, Department meetings, and teacher meetings.
Manage and maintain classroom resources.
