About The Position

Under the direction of the principal and special education director, this role provides instructional support to students with disabilities and general classroom teachers across various programs including Hearing and Vision, Autism (ASD), Emotional Impairments (EI), Learning Disabilities (LD), Otherwise Health Impaired (OHI), Speech and Language (SL), Physical Disabilities, and Cognitive Impairments (CI). The position involves monitoring and evaluating student outcomes, assisting in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and ensuring students benefit from general education experiences.

Requirements

  • Michigan elementary teacher certification with special education and early childhood education endorsement (ZA or ZS), Cognitive Impairment (SA), Emotional Impairment (SE), Learning Disabilities (SM), or Autism (SV).
  • Must meet State of Michigan certification and highly qualified requirements.
  • Meets highly qualified requirements.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
  • Special Education endorsement in LD, CI and or EI special education
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member with parents, diagnostic staff, teachers, and administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing remedial instruction in the students’ area(s) of disability.
  • Planning instruction and/or adoption of the general education curriculum to enable students to benefit from general education experiences.
  • Building trust and confidence with students, curriculum, lessons, and special ed programs and teaching methods.
  • Maintaining the physical environment of the classroom for organization and presentation purposes.
  • Instructing individuals and groups on Special Education skill areas.
  • Monitoring student progress in and outside resource room.
  • Modifying curriculum.
  • Maintaining contact with parents of students.
  • Evaluating student progress based on work output and observation, determining goals, objectives, and directions.
  • Preparing report cards, educational records, IEPC forms, classroom observation records, and other forms.
  • Participating in Special Education Committee and staff meetings.
  • Administering testing evaluations.
  • Providing both direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and general classroom teachers.
  • Serving as liaison between school staff members and school administration including special education supervisor.
  • Preparing for Educational Management Team/IEP team meetings and coordinating case management.
  • Interpreting both formal, informal, and classroom-based assessment for students to make instructional decisions.
  • Collecting data on student performance to improve student outcomes and direct instruction.
  • Selecting and adapting materials to assist students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum.
  • Participating in professional development activities designed to advance teacher knowledge in instruction, best practices, differentiated instruction, changes in educational policy, and other necessary information for effective classroom instruction and programming for students with disabilities.
  • Supervising and planning for the continuing professional development of paraeducators assigned to students with disabilities.
