About The Position

Under the direction of the Executive Director of the Bearcat B.E.S.T. transition program, the special education teacher will provide quality services to Bearcat B.E.S.T. program participants in the areas of functional academics, vocational training, training in the skills of independent living, and social skills. The Special Education Teacher will demonstrate a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programming, including specialized instruction, tutorial assistance, and consultation with other Program and College faculty and staff.

Requirements

  • An earned master’s degree or equivalence in special education or related field with PA Instructional Certification in Special Education and Elementary Education
  • Current FBI clearance, PA Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse clearance
  • Valid PA Driver’s license
  • Knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies
  • Knowledge of assessment and the ability to administer a variety of standardized measures
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, along with strong human relations proficiency
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Knowledge of, and preferably experience in, field research
  • Patience and the ability to manage challenging behavior
  • Time management skills
  • Decision making skills

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan and implement evidence-based instruction in functional academics tied to the PA Core Standards.
  • Design, plan and implement evidence-based instruction in the skills of daily living.
  • Design, plan and implement evidence-based instruction in social and self-advocacy skills.
  • Design, plan and implement evidence-based instruction in vocational skills.
  • Supervise and manage team of job coaches and student assistants.
  • Assist with field research measuring the efficacy of transition programming.
  • Collect data and analyze data for instructional decision-making, and for implementation of appropriate instructional and behavioral interventions.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all program participants.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with parents, school district personnel, and College faculty and staff.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, school district personnel and other professionals in the development and administration of each participant’s Individualized Education/Transition Plan.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare reports as requested by school districts, College personnel and government agencies.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate learning targets to students.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed in a variety of settings.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities as needed to maintain PA Instructional Certification, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities, including presenting at conferences.
  • Drive minivan and/or 12-passenger van as needed to transport students between learning environments.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of the Bearcat B.E.S.T. program.
