About The Position

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for supporting the instructional process by supervising students in the classroom and other assigned areas. This role involves developing lesson plans, delivering individualized and group instruction within curriculum guidelines, and collaborating with colleagues and administrators to address instructional and classroom issues. The teacher will also communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress and the instructional program.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Skills: Applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge: Performing algebra and/or geometry; reading technical information; composing various documents; facilitating group discussions; analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge includes appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
  • Ability: Scheduling activities, meetings, and events; gathering, collating, and/or classifying data; considering a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility to work independently and with others, analyze data using complex processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups, work with varied data types and purposes, and utilize job-related equipment. Independent problem-solving to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; problem-solving with equipment is moderate.
  • Specific ability-based competencies: Establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; working flexible hours.
  • Responsibility: Working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required.
  • Experience: Job-related experience within a specialized field is required.
  • Education: Bachelors degree in job-related area with an emphasis in Special Education.
  • Certificates and Licenses: Teaching Credential, Special Education Certification.
  • Clearances: Criminal Background Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans.
  • Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to evaluate student competency and develop learning plans.
  • Advises parents/guardians on student progress, including parent meetings and IEPs, to communicate expectations and reinforce classroom goals.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and IEP goals, providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, medical professionals, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
  • Coordinates activities such as field trips and transportation to ensure availability of resources.
  • Demonstrates methods for classroom and subject-specific assignments to ensure an effective program that meets IEP goals.
  • Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to provide an effective classroom program.
  • Instructs students to improve their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitors students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, nap times) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in meetings to convey and gather information.
  • Prepares various written materials, including IEPs, grades, attendance records, and anecdotal records, to document student progress and meet requirements.
  • Reports incidents such as fights, suspected child abuse, or substance abuse to ensure student safety and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues and provide information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
