About The Position

This is a full-time Special Education Teacher position within the Therapeutic Learning Program (TLP). The role involves supporting general educators by modifying curriculum for students eligible for special education, collaborating with various school professionals to address students' academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs, and ensuring students with disabilities are full participants in the general curriculum. The teacher will deliver direct academic instruction, implement IEPs, supervise paraprofessionals, and maintain a supportive learning environment. Responsibilities also include evaluating student progress, communicating with parents, identifying student needs, maintaining professional competence, managing instructional materials, supervising students in various settings, administering standardized tests, and participating in curriculum development and faculty committees. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • DESE certification in moderate disabilities required at the appropriate grade level required; DESE certification in severe disabilities and previous experience will also be considered if moderate license is pursued within the first year of employment
  • Must have experience working with students with social emotional and/or behavioral disabilities
  • Must have experience managing student behavior including developing behavior plans, collecting data and other tasks associated with this requirement
  • Must have excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a high level of capability with technology.
  • Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy

Nice To Haves

  • Masters Degree in Special Education preferred.
  • Previous experience with severe disabilities will also be considered if moderate license is pursued within the first year of employment
  • Preferred training or certification in multi-sensory, systematic reading program (i.e. Orton-Gillingham, Wilson)

Responsibilities

  • Supports general educator by modifying curriculum for students eligible for special education, using the course of study adopted by the MA DESE.
  • Collaborates with the social worker, special educators and general educators to support students’ academic, social/emotional and behavioral needs across educational settings.
  • Works to ensure the rights of students with disabilities to be full participants in the general curriculum.
  • Delivers direct academic instruction to students’ in accordance with Individualized Educational Plans
  • Implements state and federal laws and regulations as they apply to special education.
  • Participates in the development of and oversees implementation of IEPs for students eligible for special education.
  • Supervises and supports paraprofessionals as they implement instruction, including behavior plans.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a supportive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Evaluates and maintains data on pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents regularly through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned during the working day.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing program and to determine special education eligibility.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
