The Special Education Teacher Supervisor works collaboratively with the school staff to ensure development and implementation of best practice social/behavioral, communication, and instructional strategies within the Challenges classrooms. Serves as a clinical leader in developing instructional and behavioral interventions in classrooms. Serves in a supervisory and mentoring capacity with Challenges classroom staff to develop and implement best practices in all aspects of service delivery. Serves as part of a key leadership team in the enhancement and expansion of autism education and support services within Hammitt School programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of education specializing in teaching children with one or more of the following disabilities: behavior disorders, emotional problems, learning disabilities, autism, speech and language deficits and/or developmental delays.
  • Licensure as a special education teacher with the State of Illinois in one or more of the above-mentioned disabilities required. (LBS-1). Work experience with Autism and/or developmentally disabled populations required.
  • Five years of teaching experience required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team structure.
  • Knowledge of and skill in utilizing behavioral approaches with children.
  • Must be able to implement non-violent physical crisis intervention techniques according to The Baby Fold’s physical management and crisis intervention procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assigned staff, including employment, training, supervision, support, and performance feedback, including timely completion performance evaluations. Maintains staff accountability for lesson plans, data and analysis and report writing.
  • Reviews referrals and school record information with staff, including observations of referred students.
  • Assists with student pre-placement visits to the Challenges program.
  • Assists assigned casework staff in transition planning for students and coordinating with relevant internal and external service providers prior to discharge to another placement.
  • Coordinates with psychologist and nursing staff for medical/psychiatric case management, particularly for students requiring in-patient psychiatric care or prescription medications as part of their educational program.
  • Coordinates with Speech and Language Therapist and classroom staff to insure integration of language development and communication strategies into daily classroom operation.
  • Provides assistance for community-based activities and integration into activities in other classrooms for Challenges students.
  • Assists with classroom coverage, as needed and coordinate staff coverage issues.
  • Communicates and coordinates with family advocates or school counselors and parents to share information and address concerns, as needed.
  • Determines and implements appropriate classroom configuration of both students and staff.
  • Works with building principal to develop the annual budget for the assigned program(s), monitoring and approving expenditures in accordance with program needs and priorities.
  • Models the agency’s core values of respect, integrity, teamwork, excellence, stewardship and diversity in all activities and interactions.
  • Serves as a member of a key leadership team for the enhancement, collaborative planning, and expansion of autism education and support services within Hammitt School programs.
  • Exercises professional leadership by keeping abreast of current trends and developments in special education, particularly as it relates to the field of autism.
  • Develops and implements staff training and in-service training plan.
  • Provide training and consultation services to external entities, as requested.
  • Arranges for and assists with touring and observation opportunities for parents, district representatives and other external entities.
  • Provides expertise and oversight of the development and implementation of individualized instruction and behavior intervention plans through leading team meetings focused on student profile, data analysis, and progress review.
  • Leads the Challenges team to ensure cooperation and consistency in the services provided to students.
  • Collaborates with the supervisory and administrative staff in team decision making and the implementation of team decisions related to all aspects of service delivery.
  • Implements clinical behavioral treatment according to program guidelines, including individualized behavioral programming and crisis intervention. Includes a primary focus on social and communication supports required for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
