About The Position

Located in beautiful southeast Arizona, Sierra Vista Unified School District is seeking passionate, dedicated educators to join our team! This position is responsible for assisting students toward the attainment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth and maturation. The role involves implementing the District's philosophy of education, guiding the learning process, assessing student needs, and planning appropriate programs. The teacher will employ effective instructional methods, diagnose learning disabilities, evaluate student accomplishments, and provide progress reports. A key aspect of the role is to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning, maintain accurate records, and collaborate with colleagues, students, and parents. The Special Education Teacher will also serve as a resource to school staff, assist in identifying and referring students with disabilities, and collaborate on behavior management programs. Additionally, the role involves providing support and counsel to parents, offering in-service education, participating in Child Study Team meetings, and assisting with student placement. The teacher will maintain thorough records for individual students, assist in selecting instructional equipment, and establish cooperative relationships. Maintaining professional competence and active community involvement are also expected. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Appropriate teaching certificate as issued by the State of Arizona to include appropriate vocational certification and endorsements.
  • Have knowledge, skill and or experience in the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) strategies or be willing to receive training in those strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Implements by instruction and action the District philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals; in harmony with the goals, establishes desired student performance objectives for all lessons, units, and projects; communicates these objectives to students.
  • Assesses students to determine whether desired student performance objectives are being achieved.
  • Plans, after identifying student needs, a program of study.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis and refers to appropriate specialist where need exists.
  • Evaluates, conscientiously and fairly, the accomplishments of students and provides progress reports as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Provides an atmosphere, physical and psychological, conducive to learning.
  • Maintains accurate permanent academic and attendance records for students.
  • Counsels with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
  • Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Governing Board Policy.
  • Attends and participates in general faculty and department meetings.
  • Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for handicapped students.
  • Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified handicapped students.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and other staff members to implement behavior management programs and to provide suggestions for the student's daily activities.
  • Provides information, support and counsel to parents and family when appropriate.
  • Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to teachers and school staff members on topics concerning special education.
  • Participates in Child Study Team meetings to provide information, classroom observations, and diagnosis.
  • Provides information and assistance in placement of students who require residential or outside agency assistance.
  • Assists in program planning, identifying needs and interpreting data.
  • Maintains thorough on-going records for individual students receiving services.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
  • Maintains and improves professional competence.
  • Maintains active and harmonious involvement in community affairs.
  • Performs other reasonable duties as may be directed by the Principal.
