About The Position

This position is for the 2026-2027 school year at Washington High School. The school's educational philosophy, the Circle of Courage, is based on the Native American concept of holism and the belief of equality and the necessary parts of the greater whole. This concept relates holistically to the total needs of the student (academic, vocational, personal, and social) and encourages maximum growth and development. The four quadrants of the Circle of Courage are Belonging, Mastery, Generosity, and Independence. Academic and co-curricular programs are designed to promote these concepts, emphasizing that students grow not only as individuals but also as part of the larger community, learning the importance of accepting and learning from one another.

Requirements

  • Two years of post high school education or higher, or be able to pass a standardized test approved by the state of South Dakota, for designated Education Assistant positions.
  • At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills and knowledge of strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavior needs.
  • Experience with behavior management.

Responsibilities

  • Escorts students to transportation and other areas of the building.
  • As needed provides personal care to students with special daily living needs (e.g., toileting, feeding, physical management).
  • Provides review and practice of skills taught by a teacher with students 1:1 and in small groups in special education classroom and/or regular classroom.
  • Works with students in schools and on community outings.
  • Prepares instructional materials as directed/selected by teacher.
  • Reinforces instructional/behavioral objectives.
  • Provides clerical assistance to maintaining student records (charting, assignments, attendance, data for progress notes).
  • Assists with the supervision of students during recess, lunchroom, and on the playground.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.
  • Reinforces instructional and behavioral objectives for children.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
