About The Position

To assist in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the self-contained or regular classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Desire to assist students with special needs in a learning environment
Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved

Responsibilities

Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff, as described by an IEP
Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
Assists students requiring support in addressing personal care needs as needs and/or assigned (e.g. diapering, changing clothing, feeding, tube feeding, catheterizing, etc.) as written in their IEP I medical orders.
Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
Monitors and assists individual special education students in the classroom, library, playground activities, community outings, vocational sites, community outings, vocational sites, public transportation system, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students.
Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of special education students.
Provides direct instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher for the purpose of implementing IEP goals.
Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certified teachers for the purpose of assisting certified teachers in evaluating students.
Administers first aid for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district, state and federal requirements.
Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
Participates in in-service training programs as approved.
Maintains safe working environment and encourages colleagues to be safety minded in the performance of all school-related duties.
