About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT) to lead programming in an Intensive Support Classroom (ISC). This classroom supports students with complex learning, developmental, behavioural, and/or multiple exceptionalities who require individualized, highly structured programming. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in differentiated instruction, behaviour support planning, trauma-informed practice, and collaborative team leadership. The SERT will work closely with Educational Assistants, families, administration, and outside agencies to ensure safe, supportive, and academically meaningful learning experiences.

Requirements

  • Provide an acceptable Canadian Police Information Centre Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS)
  • Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence and have access to a vehicle
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to form effective working relationships
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge in using computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office and the ability to adapt to new systems
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team.
  • Ability to motivate and support students
  • Respect for confidentiality involving students, families and fellow employees.
  • Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT)
  • Special Education Qualifications (Part 1 minimum; Part 2 or Specialist preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience working with students with complex needs (e.g., ASD, developmental disabilities, behavioural exceptionalities, mental health needs)
  • Strong knowledge of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) principles and positive behaviour supports
  • Experience developing safety plans and working within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent classroom management and team leadership skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Anishnaabe culture, language, traditions and history

Nice To Haves

  • CPI or other crisis prevention/intervention training
  • Experience in Intensive Support or self-contained classroom settings
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
  • Training in assistive technology

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in compliance with Ontario Ministry of Education standards
  • Design alternative and/or modified curriculum programming to meet individual student needs
  • Lead and coordinate the Intensive Support Classroom team, including Educational Assistants
  • Develop and implement Behaviour Support Plans and safety plans as required
  • Use data-driven assessment practices to monitor student progress
  • Support social-emotional skill development and self-regulation strategies
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to facilitate inclusion opportunities where appropriate
  • Support IPRC processes and transition planning (entry, in-school transitions, secondary pathways)
  • Implement and support assistive technology
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with board and legislative requirements
  • Communicate regularly and sensitively with families regarding student progress
