About The Position

Under the supervision of the assigned teacher/ancillary staff, performs duties and assumes responsibilities affecting the educational, social-emotional and physical needs of students with disabilities. This role requires experience working with students at both the secondary and elementary level, the ability to establish good public relations with students, parents, and staff, and a willingness to work a flexible schedule. The paraprofessional must understand student needs and have the ability and desire to work with students with disabilities, attending to their behavioral needs while following prescribed management or instructional programs. The position also involves assisting in the development and implementation of individualized education programs and maintaining composure during stressful situations. Duties include working with individuals or small groups on follow-up activities, administering remedial activities under supervision, and supervising students in the classroom. Compliance with State Law and District policies is essential. Assistance with student needs may include feeding, lifting, transferring, and other learning activities as identified by the IEP. Attending district workshops, maintaining confidentiality, and reliable attendance are also required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to work with individuals and groups of students to support academics and behavior management.
  • Must have patience working with special needs children.
  • Ability to learn new skills, flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.
  • Works well with others, follows written and oral directions and completes assignments given.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, staff members, and departments and business contacts outside of the District.
  • Is self-directed and works without direct supervision.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form consistent with the duties of this position.
  • Ability to accurately perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to perform duties in full compliance with district requirements and School Board Policies.

Nice To Haves

  • 60 hours of college credit or High school diploma and passed state or local test designed to demonstrate knowledge and ability in subject areas as defined by NCLB requirements (example: Work Keys) may be required for some paraprofessional positions.
  • Prefer prior experience working with special needs children.
  • Experience working with students at both the secondary and elementary level.
  • Availability and willingness to work a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Works with individuals or small groups of students on follow-up activities specified by the teacher.
  • Administers, under supervision and direction, remedial or drill activities for individuals or small groups.
  • Supervises and assists students in the classroom while teacher is working with other students in small groups or individually.
  • Assists teacher with student needs; may include feeding, lifting, transferring and other learning activities.
  • Assists in other physical ways as identified by the IEP.
  • Attending district workshops as directed.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned by the teacher or administrator.
