About The Position

The Special Education Paraprofessional will assist teachers in reinforcing learning for individual students or small groups, administer and score tests as recommended by the teacher, and support students in various classroom and school activities. This role requires a high school diploma, special training, and prior job experience, with potential for alternative qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board.

Responsibilities

  • Administers, scores, and records achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
  • Works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills.
  • Operates and cares for classroom equipment.
  • Helps students master equipment or instructional materials.
  • Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials.
  • Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  • Keeps bulletin boards and classroom learning displays up to date.
  • Assists with large group activities.
  • Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in oral communication.
  • Assists students in the library or media center.
  • Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work.
  • Checks and records student attendance.
  • Helps students with their clothing.
  • Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
  • Assists with wash-up and toilet routines.
  • Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  • Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Participates in inservice training programs.
  • Performs specialized services to students as required.
