Special Education Para - Van Buren
About The Position
Under the direction of professional staff, this role involves working with students individually or in group settings at Van Buren Elementary School. Key responsibilities include assisting with student supervision in various areas such as the classroom, cafeteria, and halls, implementing behavior management strategies, and potentially riding the bus with students or working one-on-one to complete tasks. Ensuring student safety is paramount. The role also includes assisting students with necessary health assistance under nurse guidance, preparing educational materials, assisting students during mealtimes and in personal hygiene areas, and helping students get to and from the bus or car. Assignments may vary based on building and district needs.
Requirements
- Two year post secondary education or Paraeducator certificate or qualifying score on NCRC assessment test required.
- Willingness to assume responsibility.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Flexibility in working with classroom teachers.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to effectively supervise students while maintaining a positive relationship with them.
- Capable of representing the school in a professional manner, which includes but is not limited to confidentiality, communication skills, and dress.
- Regular attendance.
- Perform essential functions successfully.
- Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Ability to perform physical demands including frequent standing, walking, using hands and fingers to handle/feel objects, tools, or controls, talking and hearing.
- Ability to frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above head and forward 0-24 inches and occasionally up to 36 inches.
- Continuous use of hand strength to grasp items.
- Frequent bending or twisting at the neck and trunk.
- Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds 0-12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet.
- Ability to push/pull items such as tables and carts.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.
