About The Position

The Special Education Instructional Assistant - Job Class #8323, 7 hours/180 days at Wayland Alexander Elementary will assist teachers in designated instructional, non-instructional, management, and clerical tasks. The variety of activities will be determined by the needs of the students. Aids may conduct community-based instruction and classroom activities apart from the physical presence of the teacher with appropriate direction and supervision. This role requires knowledge of basic subjects, safe practices, correct English usage, interpersonal skills, and basic record-keeping. The assistant must be able to learn child guidance principles, communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff, perform clerical duties, operate equipment, and monitor student behavior.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED Certificate.
  • Demonstrates competent language skills.
  • Has demonstrated ability to work with children in an organized setting.
  • Participates in program training as specified by the Kentucky Department of Education and local district.
  • Successful completion of the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment test.
  • Has met the requirements of a criminal records check as specified by Kentucky State Law.
  • Has met health requirements as specified in district personnel policy.
  • Must demonstrate and/or develop skills to operate office and educational equipment.
  • Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Learn child guidance principles and practices.
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public including members of the ethnic communities.
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide quickly and accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers in designated instructional, non-instructional, management, and clerical tasks.
  • Conducts community-based instruction and classroom activities under direction and supervision.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records and information.
  • Attends professional development meetings.
  • Conducts classroom instruction under the direction and supervision of the teacher.
  • Assists with the administration of assessments.
  • Conducts adaptive physical education and other motor activities under teacher direction and supervision.
  • Assists children with self-care activities, including feeding and toileting.
  • Assists in large-group instruction.
  • Tutors students individually and in small groups without direct supervision.
  • Assists in reviewing home and seat work activities.
  • Assists children with oral and written communication, make-up work, and hands-on activities.
  • Observes and records student behavior; assists in behavior management systems.
  • Reinforces positive behavior of students.
  • Participates in reading and storytelling activities.
  • Assists in developing students socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically.
  • Collects and prepares materials and manages displays and teaching centers.
  • Records written materials for children with visual or physical disabilities.
  • Helps children solve personal conflicts with other children.
  • Is familiar with and assists with implementation of crisis policies and exit procedures.
  • Works with audio-visual equipment and copying machines.
  • Assists in classroom organization and management.
  • Assists students with appropriate bus behavior and on instructional field trips and community-based instruction.
  • Assists certified persons in implementing policies and regulations governing student conduct.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher and/or principal.
  • Dresses appropriately for the job and is neat and well-groomed.
