This position involves working with students with emotional and behavioral disturbances (EBD) under the guidance of a classroom teacher. The Special Education Instructional Assistant will prepare for classroom activities, deliver specially designed instruction, and assist in implementing adaptations, modifications, and accommodations to the general curriculum to meet individual student needs as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Responsibilities also include performing clerical duties, assisting with health services and self-care, gathering and recording student progress data, and creating, selecting, adapting, and evaluating instructional materials. The role requires assisting students individually and in small groups across various settings, including the resource room, regular classroom, and community. A patient attitude is necessary when assisting students through stressful situations and with mobility challenges, which may involve lifting, positioning, and moving students, as well as using gross motor equipment. The assistant will also support therapists and implement the student's IEP goals, including behavior support and management plans. A critical aspect of the role is aiding in the management of student behavior, including physically forceful behaviors, and implementing prevention, de-escalation, and safe physical intervention strategies. Adherence to professional ethics, including strict confidentiality, is required, and parent requests for information must be referred to the teacher. The position requires functioning as a cooperative team member and maintaining certification in Safe Crisis Management.
