About The Position

Jefferson Middle School is seeking a Special Education Department Chair to lead their Special Education Department. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and district guidelines, managing student information, and fostering effective communication among staff, parents, and administrators. The Department Chair will also play a key role in supporting curricular and behavioral strategies for students with disabilities and coordinating assessments.

Requirements

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator’s License with LBS1 secondary endorsement
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching experience in special education
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing special education
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work with administrators, teachers, and parents
  • Knowledge of instructional and academic best practices for students with disabilities
  • Knowledge of effective curricular accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities

Nice To Haves

  • Masters degree in Special Education or related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and conduct conferences in accordance with state and district guidelines
  • Maintain up-to-date information of special education students in the district’s Information System
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with parents/guardians
  • Process initial case study evaluations and reevaluations within the mandated timelines
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the Special Education Department, building administration and special education staff
  • Maintain a high level of communication with building administrators concerning the discipline of special education students
  • Coordinate the implementation of state and local assessments to special education students
  • Provide support and consultation to the Building Review Team
  • Provide curricular and behavioral support to school staff
  • Clearly articulate current district special education policies and procedures to parents and district personnel
  • Perform other duties as assigned
