About The Position

This is a grant-funded position for a 2-year grant, with continuation dependent upon satisfactory performance, program needs, and availability of grant funds. The primary purpose of this role is to assist in meeting the physical, academic, and personal needs of individual students with disabilities, both inside and outside the classroom. The aide will support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and assist with self-help and behavior management strategies. This position works under the general supervision of the assistant principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher, with assignments based on the recommendation of the ARD Committee.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and ability to pass a rigorous content-oriented exam OR Associate degree or 48 semester hours of college credit
  • Current Texas educational aide certificate or ability to obtain
  • Some experience working with children
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in handling confidential information
  • Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

  • Helps students take care of physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Manages the behavior of assigned students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Works with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keeps the teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participates in professional development, department meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
