About The Position

This is a one-on-one position with an assigned service pathway that is To-Be-Determined. The role of Special Education Assistant is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in a regular or self-contained classroom. This includes assisting in implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time, providing information to appropriate school personnel, and attending IEP meetings. Responsibilities may vary based on school/program needs, such as generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, or autism.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following: a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment, an associate degree or higher, seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher, or completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Secure Training, CPR, First Aid.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to ensure all special education students can participate.
  • Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, grades papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing individual student needs.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations to allow them to function in the school environment.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) for information acquisition and conveyance.
  • Confers regularly with teachers (special education and mainstream) to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Confers with teachers and/or parents (e.g., phone calls, emails, parent-teacher meetings, recording student progress) to provide information on student progress as per their individual educational program.
  • Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to meet special education student needs, ensure safety, and provide a consistent environment.
  • Instructs students in individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement remediation plans, and ensure student success.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting materials, checking papers, attendance, setting up adapted projects) to ensure availability and provide reliable information.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid students and provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
