About The Position
This position involves assisting students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments to reinforce learning concepts and help students achieve academic goals, adhering to Individual Education Plans (IEP). The role supports Special Populations teachers by assisting with classroom assignments, tests, homework, and modifying materials. The assistant will also monitor students in various settings to ensure a safe learning environment, implement behavior strategies, and may assist with daily living activities if required. Communication with instructional staff, support personnel, and parents/guardians is essential for evaluating progress and implementing educational objectives.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalency
- 1 year of college credit (24 hours) from an accredited institution of higher education OR successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment prior to employment start date.
- Physical presence is an essential function of this job.
Responsibilities
- Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals, and adhering to Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Assists with classroom assignments, tests, homework, make-up work, etc. in order to support Special Populations teachers in the instructional process.
- May help modify materials to fit individual needs.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents/guardians to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP and/or academic objectives.
- Set-ups and facilitates individual workstations and assists with drill and practice, group projects, and seat work.
- Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings in order to provide a safe and positive learning experience.
- Escorts students to and from the lunchroom, monitors students in the cafeteria and hallways, keeping noise levels reasonable, reports discipline problems to cafeteria monitor and/or teachers, and may ensure tables and table areas are kept clean for the student being served, if the IEP states.
- Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students to communicate information to the appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel.
- Implements behavior strategies under the supervision of the Special Populations teacher that address a wide variety of behaviors that may include physical/verbal aggression and/or non-compliance.
- May assist with daily living activities (e.g. meals and meal delivery; toileting needs; monitoring medical conditions; lifting, transferring, and positioning students as instructed by teacher and/or therapist), if required.
- Maintains classroom routines while the teacher performs other educational duties.
- Complies with all policies established by the district, state and federal law.
