About The Position

The Special Education Assistant (Cross Cat) position at McKinley HS works 6.5 hours per day for 191 days per year. The starting hourly rate is $18.95 at Step 1. This role involves assisting teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and supporting students to meet their educational needs, fostering independence and personal responsibility. Responsibilities include providing assistance with daily living activities, mobility, and academic and behavioral support as directed by the certified teacher. Applicants must meet Highly Qualified criteria, which includes specific educational achievements or passing a state assessment.

Highly Qualified status: Two (2) years of college (Minimum of 48 Semester Hours, or 72 Quarter Hours), or possess an Associate’s Degree, or passed the Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Exam.
Submit a copy of Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Exam results, or a copy of college transcript(s) to verify Highly Qualified Status.
Must have a valid Educational Aide Permit, or obtain one immediately upon being employed with the Canton City School District.

Responsibilities

Assists the teacher to implement the IEP’s
Assists students as needed to fulfill their educational needs
Helps students develop a sense of independence and personal responsibility
Provides lavatory assistance when necessary
Assists students during lunch and recreational activities
Assists students to and from classes
Assists students on trips
Understands and maintains the academic and behavioral standards set for the students by the certified teacher
Assists students loading and unloading on buses
Assists in active therapy programs
Performs other duties as assigned
