About The Position

Rite of Passage Team is hiring for a Special Education Teacher at Lava Heights Academy in Toquerville, Utah. Lava Heights Academy is a residential treatment program that provides a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for vulnerable young women who are referred from juvenile courts and social service agencies. The youth enter the program with a history of abuse, neglect, trauma, substance abuse, mental illness, and violence. They graduate as educated young women who have overcome challenges and have demonstrated making healthy choices. This is a full-time, salaried position working with youth at risk, teaching grades 7-12 in a multi-age classroom environment. The role offers small classroom sizes (approx. 10 students per class) and a supportive, collaborative team of educators. The position allows for the unique opportunity to create a positive, safe, and supportive environment for the youth served while building a career rich in growth opportunities and self-fulfillment.

Requirements

Be at least 21 years of age.
Possess a current and valid UT State teaching license credentialed in English, Math, Science and/or Special Education.
At least 3 years of successful classroom experience.
Have related experience working with at-risk youth.
If required to operate a company vehicle during the course of employment, must meet the requirements to be an eligible ROP driver.
Must possess a current State Driver’s License and have an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years.
Be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screen, physical, and TB test.
Be able to pass a search of the child abuse central registry.

Responsibilities

Teaching to grades 7-12 in a multi-age classroom environment.
Using various methodologies and research related to learning.
Implementing effective classroom management techniques and behavioral management styles.
Utilizing effective communication techniques that enable positive and productive collaboration with site staff.
Using technology as an educational tool.
