About The Position

The Special Education Administrator will provide leadership, coordination, and supervision of all special education students requiring services and programming in out-of-district placements. This role involves coordinating the special education process, managing paperwork and education plans, and maintaining communication with parents, external placements, and agencies. The administrator will monitor the performance of special education students, implement new procedures based on federal law changes, assist with Medicaid reimbursement, and participate in professional development. A key aspect of the role is addressing parent concerns proactively and responsively. The administrator will also attend special education administrators' meetings, research alternate placement options, coordinate student transitions to and from outside placements, ensure proper documentation for transitions, observe students in various settings, implement procedures for placement, evaluation, and re-evaluation, and assist in preparing the out-of-district budget and circuit breaker documents. Additional duties may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts license as a special education administrator
  • Master's degree in special education from an accredited institution with significant coursework/study in the field of educational administration
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in public education
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with parents, outside agencies and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise special education program and staff
  • Knowledgeable about state and federal special education laws

  • Outstanding preparation and/or experience may be substituted for some of the above qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, coordination, and supervision of special education students in out-of-district placements.
  • Coordinate the special education process.
  • Manage paper processes and education plans.
  • Maintain timely communication with parents, out-of-district placements, and outside agencies.
  • Monitor the general performance of special education students within the school.
  • Implement new processes and procedures as dictated by changes in federal special education law.
  • Assist in the Medicaid reimbursement process.
  • Participate in relevant professional development activities.
  • Ensure parent concerns and problems are dealt with in a timely, responsive, and proactive manner.
  • Attend all special education administrators' meetings.
  • Research alternate placement options for special education students.
  • Coordinate the transition of special education students to and from outside placements.
  • Ensure the preparation and sending of all essential documents for transition.
  • Observe special education students in various settings, including those in out-of-district placements.
  • Implement procedures for placement, evaluation, and re-evaluation of students.
  • Assist in the preparation of the out-of-district budget.
  • Complete all necessary documents required for circuit breaker.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services or their designee.
