About The Position

This is a student assistant position for the stacks and reference desk within Special Collections. The role involves performing specialized office support functions and services that require training, skill, and experience. Duties include providing customer service and specific information, data entry, and utilizing standard office software programs and systems. The assistant will work within established guidelines and policies, with limited supervision, and is expected to perform a wide range of duties. The position supports a robust Special Collections reference desk by retrieving materials from closed stacks, re-shelving books and other library materials, scanning documents, conducting basic research tasks, and organizing materials in the closed stacks.

Requirements

  • Must be able to handle carefully and with respect, a wide variety of unique, historical and fragile books and manuscripts.
  • Must be able to work in a restrictive, high-security environment.
  • Must be very responsible and adhere to all required procedures.
  • Must be respectful of the collection.
  • Must possess a high level of independence and analytical skills to complete many assigned tasks.
  • Must have a sharp focus and keen attention to detail.
  • Current UVA student.
  • Availability for rotating Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to tolerate the building temperature which is kept in the mid-60s.

Nice To Haves

  • Federal Work-Study students are preferred.
  • Library experience or interest in library and archival work.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieving books, manuscripts, archives, and other materials from closed stacks for researchers or class use.
  • Shelving new books and other library materials.
  • Working with serials.
  • Re-shelving books, manuscripts, archives, and other library materials according to Special Collections stacks manager's protocols.
  • Scanning rare books, primary source documents, and other collection material.
  • Assisting with interlibrary loan requests.
  • Conducting basic research tasks using the library catalog (Virgo), Workflows, ArchiveSpace, and finding aids.
  • Performing other library projects as needed and as student interest dictates.
