About The Position

The Special Collections Instruction Assistant is a support position in the Albert & Shirley Small Special Collections Library. The student employee in this position will work closely with the Instruction Librarian/Archivist at Special Collections to prepare for class and group visits to the library.

Requirements

  • Current UVA student eligible for student employment
  • Frequent lifting (up to 40 pounds) of boxes and oversize items
  • Routine use of ladders to retrieve and reshelve materials
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Manual dexterity for careful handling of fragile materials
  • Ability to work between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday
  • Ability to work in an environment that is maintained below 65 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve the collections
  • Excellent computer and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Creating request slips for materials
  • Pulling and reshelving materials from the closed stacks for classes
  • Occasionally advising on the selection of materials for classes
  • Assisting Special Collections staff in setting up materials
