About The Position

Elections Alberta is an independent, non-partisan office of the Legislature responsible for administering provincial elections, by-elections and referenda. Our mission is to serve Albertans as an independent election management body committed to the administration of modern, transparent, and accessible democratic processes that ensure the integrity and enhance the value of Alberta’s electoral system. This role is essential in delivering front-line services to voters and supporting key electoral processes. It requires excellent communication and customer service skills, the ability to follow processes with precision and efficiency, a keen attention to detail, and strong collaboration within a team. There may be several job opportunities available and may start as soon as possible.

Requirements

  • Two-year diploma in a related field or directly related experience considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education.
  • Experience in management or supervision is required.
  • Ability to give clear directions, provide constructive feedback, and effectively coach the team to achieve results.
  • Ability to lead, performance manage and oversee Special Ballot Clerks and provide additional training as necessary.
  • Capacity to understand complex processes and provide accurate information when responding to inquiries from staff, electors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving abilities; capable of assessing problems, recognizing their significance, and escalating issues to the Training and Development Specialist quickly and appropriately.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information with discretion.
  • Excellent speaking, listening, and reading communication skills to make and answer phone calls professionally, serve callers, receive and provide information, and interact with colleagues.
  • If English is not your first language, you must provide documentation demonstrating CLB 8 in reading, speaking, and listening.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to learn new applications and use Windows and MS Office effectively.
  • Ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks efficiently and accurately, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Must be prepared and able to act as a non-partisan representative of Elections Alberta.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Candidates must be able to commute to the office for their shifts.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in operations management, elections, registration, admissions, or claims processing, intake coordination, data entry, documentation, and administrative/clerical experience is an asset.
  • Experience with secure handling of files and records is an asset.
  • Knowledge of electoral processes in Alberta would be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are available to work full-time.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing and supporting Special Ballot Clerks.
  • Supervising and assisting with the receipt, verification, and processing of vote-by-mail ballot applications for electoral events.
  • Managing or supervising staff.
  • Leading a team of up to 20 Special Ballot Clerks as they complete their duties in processing special ballot applications and returns.
  • Supporting recruitment, scheduling, and performance management of Special Ballot Clerks.
  • Ensuring ongoing compliance with relevant legislation and Elections Alberta directives for the careful and confidential handling and storing of materials and data.
  • Participating in the planning and delivery of the unofficial count for special ballots starting on October 19.
