About The Position

THIS IS A CONTINOUS RECRUITMENT FOR SPECIAL AGENT. The position will be announced for two (2) weeks in October and one (1) week in November. Qualified applicants will be sent an email notification with a link to schedule a test appointment. The notification will consist of the link to schedule a test appointment, testing dates and times, and the physical address for testing locations. Test sessions are in-person only. You may only apply and take the Special Agent Test once during this time. If you currently going through the Special Agent Hiring Process OR on the Special Agent Eligible Applicants list, then you do not need to re-apply to this announcement. Salary is non-negotiable. The GBI will follow State Board Rules for current state employees. All applicants must download (right click to save), complete, and upload the Pre-employment Questionnaire. Failure to complete and upload the Pre-employment Questionnaire will result in your application being rejected. This is a sensitive government position. The GBI follows the Federal statute regarding illegal drug use and is a drug-free workplace. Although some states have legalized recreational drug use, applicants who currently use illegal drugs or controlled substances will be subject to disqualification from employment with the GBI. Employment for the selected candidate(s) is contingent upon the successful completion of a GBI background investigation including criminal, credit and driver's history checks, polygraph examination, fingerprinting and drug screening. Effective January 1, 2021, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) has implemented a Physical Ability Test (PAT) requirement. The PAT is a timed obstacle course and must be completed in 2 minutes and 6 seconds or less. All candidates who are required to successfully complete the Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) course in the State of Georgia must take and pass the PAT. The PAT can only be taken 30 days prior to your identified BLE mandate course. Candidates who fail the PAT will not be allowed to attend their assigned BLE.

Requirements

  • All applicants MUST SUBMIT a COMPLETED Pre-employment Questionnaire along with the State of Georgia Application in order to be considered.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • A passing score on the Special Agent Test
  • At least 21 years of age
  • A citizen of the United States
  • Incumbents in this job are by law considered to be peace officers. Therefore, applicants must meet the standards prescribed by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.)
  • The applicant must have a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Applicants who do not have a Bachelor`s degree may take the exam if they are graduating with a Bachelor`s degree no later than May 31, 2027
  • The PAT is a timed obstacle course and must be completed in 2 minutes and 6 seconds or less
  • All candidates who are required to successfully complete the Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) course in the State of Georgia must take and pass the PAT
  • The PAT can only be taken 30 days prior to your identified BLE mandate course
  • Distant vision - minimum vision of 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye, corrected (with glasses or contact lenses), and minimum of 20/200 in each eye, uncorrected (without glasses or contacts)
  • Near vision - minimum of 20/40, corrected or uncorrected in each eye
  • Adequate depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors
  • Peripheral vision - at least 70 degrees in each eye
  • All questions must be answered truthfully

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Accounting, Business, Finance, Computer Science, Psychology or a Foreign Language
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university and two years of experience as a uniformed police officer and/or criminal investigator
  • Applicants who are currently Georgia P.O.S.T. certified in Basic Law Enforcement and in good standing with P.O.S.T. may be given preference
  • Applicants currently P.O.S.T. PBLE certified are responsible for ensuring they have their 20 hours of annual training, to include firearms re-qualification and use of deadly force

Responsibilities

  • Trained to conduct criminal investigations of all types, to assist local law enforcement in criminal investigations
  • Conducts criminal investigations as part of on-the-job training, including interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses, gathering pertinent information, and conducting arrests, searches, and seizures
  • Testifies in court
  • Prepares case reports of criminal investigations
  • Performs other duties in compliance with established GBI and work unit policies
  • Successful completion, to the satisfaction of the GBI, of a pre-employment physical examination, psychological examination, and pre-employment drug screening
  • Successfully complete the Physical Ability Test (PAT) requirement implemented by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST)
  • Complete successfully Georgia Basic Law Enforcement Mandate Course
  • Must successfully complete GBI High Liability Course
  • Will be required to successfully complete the GBI Basic Agent Course (BAC)
  • Operating a state vehicle is required
  • Required to work on-call rotation as needed to include overnight
  • Respond to calls when not on-call rotation as needed
  • Required to remain in initial assigned location for three (3) years before requesting a transfer
  • Crime Scene Specialist Special (CSS) Agent must be in the CSS program for a minimum of five (5) years
  • Required to establish residency in their area of assignment or reside within a twenty-five (25) miles radius of your assigned regional boundary for statewide assignments
  • The selected candidate will be required to establish residency in your area of assignment or reside within a twenty-five (25) miles radius of your assigned regional boundary
