About The Position

Under the direction of the sterile processing leadership Team, an SPD Technician I will decontaminate, inspect, assemble, high-level disinfect (HLD), sterilize, store, and distribute instruments, devices, and medical equipment throughout the UMass Memorial Medical Center, along with other associated tasks. They will utilize infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace. Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Leadership Team, an SPD Tech II will perform decontamination, inspection/assembly, high level disinfection(HLD)/sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments, devices and medical equipment throughout the UMass Network, along with other associated tasks, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process while maintaining a clean, safe and organized workspace. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Completion of, or enrollment in an accredited Central Sterile Processing Technician program.
Certification is required within one year of employment. Failure to obtain certification within one year will result in termination from this position.
Knowledge of sterilization standards/procedures and associated terminology.
Proficiency with basic computer functions.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
2 years’ experience in Sterile Processing as a Certified and Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician.
Current Certified Registered Sterile Processing Technician certification.
Current Certified Instrument Specialist advanced certification.
Knowledge of sterilization standards /procedures and Central Service-related terminology.
Proficiency with basic computer functions.

Minimum of one year in Sterile Processing as a Certified and Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician with UMass CSPD.

Responsibilities

Collects, receives, and records soiled instrumentation, equipment, and devices for the decontamination process and associated tasks as outlined by the established policies and processes, guided by industry regulations and recommendations, and manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFUs).
Utilizes equipment, tools, solutions, and personal protective equipment in a prescribed manner while following universal safety precautions.
Maintains a clean, safe and organized workspace.
Inspects for cleanliness and performs function testing of instrumentation, equipment, and devices.
Assembles, packages, and records instrumentation, equipment, and devices following the established procedure for each.
Records and routes instrumentation, equipment, and devices for proper sterilization or high-level disinfection (HLD) as identified and outlined by manufacturer’s IFUs.
Performs identified HLD process or sterilization cycle with appropriate equipment.
Performs, monitors and records routine safety and efficacy testing of associated equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and industry standards.
Ensures proper inventory, rotation and distribution of instrumentation, equipment, and carts as observed by supervisors.
Distributes instruments and supplies according to the needs of the end user.
Performs in the capacity of charge tech to entry level staff.
Precepts to ensure quality of work is within department standards.
Internal inventory responsibilities including supplies, back up stock, and the expiration process driving reduction of defect resolution issues.
Backlog oversight. When backlog exists, assists in coordination of reduction of backlog through prioritization, distribution, and completion of trays.
Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Respects and promotes a team culture with communication and collaboration.
Adherence to all UMass policies.
Performs outlined and associated tasks as required or directed.
