About The Position

Sterile Processing Service Coordinator Location: BMC Campus, Springfield, MA Schedule: 2nd Shift 10pm - 6:30am - Monday - Friday (rotating weekends & holidays required) Baystate Health, a nationally recognized leader in healthcare quality and safety, is seeking a dedicated Sterile Processing Service Coordinator to join our team in Springfield, MA. Position Summary The Sterile Processing Service Coordinator is an experienced leader who combines technical expertise in sterile processing with strong mentoring and team leadership skills. This role encompasses the full scope of responsibilities for Sterile Processing Technicians Levels I, II, and III, while also serving as a resource for education, quality assurance, and operational leadership. As an expert in sterile processing standards, including AAMI guidelines, this coordinator: Provides mentorship and education to technicians across all levels Leads charge responsibilities and serves on-call as needed Drives continuous quality improvement and participates in hospital-wide initiatives Ensures compliance with regulatory standards from OSHA, DPH, Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN Collaborates closely with surgical services to meet department and customer needs

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Dual Certification in Sterile Processing (e.g., CRCST or CBSPD) is required
  • 3–5 years of experience in sterile processing, with comprehensive knowledge of operating room instruments and protocols

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a surgical technologist or equivalent sterile processing experience with demonstrated leadership ability
  • Proficiency in computer applications, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Expert-level skills in sterilization techniques, decontamination, instrument assembly, and case cart preparation
  • Strong communication, mentoring, and team leadership skills

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and consistent application of sterilization standards and practices.
  • Assume charge role and on-call duties, ensuring full accountability for assigned services.
  • Precept and mentor Sterile Processing Technicians, facilitating ongoing education and compliance with policies.
  • Stay current with surgical specialties, emerging technologies, and industry trends to inform staff development.
  • Prioritize, organize, and coordinate daily workflow and technician assignments to optimize efficiency and meet customer demands.
  • Maintain, audit, and analyze decontamination, sterilization, and equipment maintenance records; troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with OR leadership regarding equipment purchasing, inventory levels, and utilization.

  • Apply critical thinking and sound judgment in problem-solving and escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicate operational updates and procedural changes to staff through multiple channels (verbal, written, electronic).
