Space Weather Intern

Lynker Corporation

About The Position

Lynker Corporation is seeking a motivated undergraduate student for a summer internship focused on the study and development of analysis tools and methods for geomagnetic indices. This role involves working with one of the longest continuous geophysical datasets available—over 100 years of geomagnetic disturbance records—to support space weather research, solar-terrestrial physics, and long-term climate studies of the near-Earth environment. This internship offers hands-on experience with real-world historical datasets, exposure to cutting-edge space weather research, and the opportunity to develop practical skills in scientific programming and data analysis that are highly valued in academia and industry. If you are passionate about data-driven discovery and the dynamic behavior of Earth’s magnetic environment, we encourage you to apply! This is a summer internship and the individual must be enrolled with the fall 2026 semester to qualify

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Physics, Geophysics, Space Science, Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python (pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib/Plotly);
  • Interest in space weather, solar physics, or Earth’s magnetic field.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with time-series analysis.
  • Prior experience with scientific computing or data visualization.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, digitize, and quality-control historical geomagnetic index data (e.g., Kp, Ap, aa, Dst, AE) from archives spanning the late 19th century to present.
  • Develop and improve Python-based analysis tools for time-series processing, statistical characterization, and visualization of long-term geomagnetic activity.
  • Explore trends, periodicities, and extreme events in the data using modern techniques such as wavelet analysis, machine learning anomaly detection, or spectral methods.
  • Document methods and contribute to open-source toolkits for the space physics community.
  • Present findings in team meetings and a final internship report or poster.
  • Assist with any projects and other related duties as assigned to support team objectives and further your professional development.
