About The Position

The Starlink Space Lasers team develops, produces, and deploys satellite free-space optical communication systems. The Space Lasers Engineer contributes to developing laser communications terminals and imaging products for Starlink satellites. The role applies theoretical expertise and practical implementation skills to real-time, resource-constrained systems, with responsibility for free-space optical system design, validation, and operation. The engineer helps develop laser communication systems and optical products, including systems supporting precise navigation in space environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or another engineering or STEM discipline.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on laboratory or work experience in optics, photonics, laser technology, or precision mechanical design or testing; university lab, student project, or internship experience qualifies.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a computer programming language such as C++, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in physics or an engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency with optical analysis tools such as Zemax.
  • Hands-on experience in optical design or in system design, integration, and testing of laser communication systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience with lasers, photodiodes, fiber optics, optics testing and troubleshooting techniques, and signal-integrity principles.
