About The Position

Join the culinary team at Emory University as a Sous Chef, where you'll play a key role in delivering exceptional dining experiences for students, faculty, staff, and campus guests. This position is ideal for a hands-on culinary leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and is passionate about food quality, team development, and operational excellence. Working closely with the Executive Chef, you'll oversee daily kitchen operations, support culinary innovation, and help ensure food is prepared safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. You'll also contribute to catering events, menu execution, inventory management, and the ongoing development of kitchen staff.

Requirements

  • Progressive experience in culinary leadership within high-volume foodservice, higher education, healthcare, hospitality, or corporate dining.
  • Experience with catering and special event production is preferred.
  • Experience with institutional or batch cooking is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of food preparation, production planning, menu development, food costing, sanitation, and presentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and motivate a diverse culinary team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and other computer applications.
  • ServSafe Certification preferred or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Passion for hospitality, continuous improvement, and creating an outstanding guest experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Culinary Arts or equivalent combination of education and professional culinary experience.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Executive Chef to oversee daily culinary operations and ensure consistent food quality, presentation, and service.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop hourly culinary associates while fostering a positive, team-oriented culture.
  • Prepare and oversee the production of menu items using standardized recipes and proper cooking techniques.
  • Assist with menu planning, recipe development, and seasonal offerings that meet the needs of the Emory University community.
  • Execute catering and special events with an emphasis on quality, organization, and guest satisfaction.
  • Monitor food costs, labor, inventory, ordering, and waste to support financial goals.
  • Maintain the highest standards of food safety, sanitation, and HACCP compliance.
  • Support the implementation of new culinary programs and initiatives in partnership with operational and culinary leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with all company and university policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
