About The Position

The Sonographer – Extended Role is responsible for providing limited obstetric ultrasound services and patient-centered pregnancy options counseling in alignment with Aspire Women’s Clinic’s mission, medical protocols, and ethical standards. This role integrates professional ultrasound competency with compassionate support, medical screening within the defined scope, and collaborative coordination of care within a life-affirming clinical environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of limited obstetric ultrasound training program (NIFLA or equivalent).
  • Must hold current RDMS certification (OB/GYN specialty preferred) through ARDMS.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Minimum one year of clinical experience preferred in a medical, sonography, or women’s health setting.
  • Excellent communication, counseling, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must maintain alignment with Aspire’s mission, statement of faith, and patient care standards.
  • Bilingual : English & Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Perform limited obstetric ultrasounds according to Aspire’s Limited Ultrasound Policy and Procedure and under the supervision of the Medical Director.
  • Scope of practice is limited to: Confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), Measurement and documentation of estimated gestational age (EGA) using standard biometric methods, Assessment of fetal viability through visualization and documentation of fetal cardiac activity.
  • Accurately document all findings in the electronic health record (EHR) and ensure images meet quality standards for physician interpretation.
  • Obtain and document informed consent for ultrasound procedures.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment, perform daily QC checks, and report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Maintain strict infection control and adherence to OSHA and HIPAA standards.
  • Provide pregnancy options counseling in a compassionate and unbiased manner, presenting information on parenting, adoption, and abortion risks and alternatives in accordance with Aspire’s mission and policies.
  • Offer emotional support and active listening to patients experiencing uncertainty or conflict about pregnancy decisions.
  • Explain ultrasound procedures clearly, including the limited purpose and what findings can or cannot be determined.
  • Document counseling sessions, follow-up recommendations, and referrals clearly and accurately.
  • Collaborate with care coordinators and RNs for continuity of patient care and appropriate follow-up.
  • Support patients during their appointment with emotional sensitivity and respect for autonomy and free will.
  • Conduct medical screening for ultrasound eligibility related to limited ultrasound criteria (transabdominal or transvaginal), ensuring patients do not present with disqualifying symptoms or conditions such as: Active vaginal bleeding, Severe or persistent abdominal cramping, Recent injury to the lower body, Known ectopic pregnancy, Post abortive ultrasound.
  • Notify the supervising RN or Medical Director when a patient presents with disqualifying symptoms or when referral to a higher level of care is indicated.
  • Follow physician or RN direction in coordinating referrals for prenatal or emergency medical care when indicated.
  • Assist in maintaining medical supplies, exam room readiness, and adherence to clinical policies and documentation standards.
  • Participate in ongoing staff training, case review, and medical quality assurance activities.
  • Adhere to Aspire’s confidentiality, ethical, and professional conduct policies.
