About The Position

The Lead Sonic Driller is responsible for leading environmental drilling operations, including sonic and Geoprobe/direct-push drilling, soil and groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation, and well abandonment activities. This position oversees daily field execution, directs drilling crew members, maintains safe and efficient jobsite operations, and ensures work is completed in accordance with project requirements, safety standards, and client expectations. The Lead Sonic Driller serves as the primary field lead for drilling activities and is responsible for operating and maintaining drilling equipment, completing required field documentation, supporting client communication, and mentoring crew members while promoting a safe, professional, and productive work environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Texas Driller’s License required.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of environmental drilling experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on sonic drill rig operating experience required.
  • Hands-on Geoprobe/direct-push drill experience required.
  • Prior experience serving as a lead driller, crew lead, or primary operator responsible for directing field crew activities required.
  • Experience with environmental soil and groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation, well abandonment, grouting, and drilling documentation required.
  • Ability to safely operate, inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot drilling rigs and related support equipment required.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices, site-specific safety plans, PPE requirements, and environmental field procedures required.
  • Ability to travel for out-of-town assignments required.

Nice To Haves

  • Class A CDL strongly preferred.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification strongly preferred.
  • Current or prior drilling licenses, registrations, or apprenticeships in additional states preferred.
  • Experience operating multiple drilling methods, including sonic, direct push, hollow-stem auger, air rotary, mud rotary, or other environmental drilling methods preferred.
  • Experience operating skid loaders, mini-excavators, forklifts, telehandlers, or similar support equipment preferred.
  • Experience supporting environmental remediation, emergency response, waste management, or investigation projects preferred.
  • Experience training drilling assistants or junior drillers preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform environmental drilling activities, including sonic drilling, direct-push/Geoprobe drilling, soil and groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation, well abandonment, and other related environmental field services.
  • Operate sonic drill rigs, Geoprobe/direct-push rigs, support vehicles, and related drilling equipment safely and effectively.
  • Serve as the lead field representative for the drilling crew, coordinating daily work activities, assigning tasks, training crew members, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project requirements.
  • Review and follow drilling plans, site-specific health and safety plans, job safety analyses, SDS information, client requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare drilling equipment, tooling, supplies, and vehicles for field assignments; perform setup and breakdown of drilling sites.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform preventive maintenance on drilling rigs, tooling, vehicles, hydraulic systems, small diesel engines, and related equipment.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, incidents, accidents, near misses, or irregularities in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure crew members follow company safety policies, site-specific safety plans, PPE requirements, and applicable DOT requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers, clients, consultants, inspectors, subcontractors, and internal team members to support successful field execution.
  • Maintain positive client relationships through professional communication, quality field performance, and timely completion of assigned work.
  • Manage work site activity, including organization of equipment, materials, tooling, waste, and sample handling.
  • Support transportation of equipment and materials and comply with applicable DOT rules and regulations when operating company vehicles or hauling equipment.
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, and training necessary for the position.
  • Travel to project locations as assigned, including out-of-town and multi-day assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
