About The Position

AES is seeking a Solutions Engineer – Systems Integration to contribute to the electrical, controls, and mechanical integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for utility-scale renewable energy projects. Working with senior engineers and cross-functional partners, this role supports BESS products from requirements development and qualification through installation, troubleshooting, and operational support. The engineer helps ensure that BESS subsystems interface correctly and operate safely, reliably, and as intended across project environments. The role applies established engineering methods, develops technical judgment, and takes ownership of defined work packages while escalating complex or high-risk decisions to senior technical leads.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Approximately 2–4 years of relevant engineering experience in BESS, renewable energy, power systems, controls, product development, systems integration, or complex electromechanical equipment.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical systems, controls, communications, power electronics, and system interfaces.
  • Ability to read and review schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, technical drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Experience supporting engineering analysis, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of structured problem solving, requirements management, verification, and configuration control.
  • Ability to organize technical work, manage assigned deliverables, and communicate effectively with internal teams, suppliers, and contractors.
  • Willingness to travel to factories and project sites, approximately 25%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with utility-scale battery energy storage, solar, or other renewable energy projects.
  • Familiarity with BESS and electrical safety standards, including UL 9540, UL 9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 72, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 110, NFPA 111, IFC, IEC standards, and applicable electrical codes.
  • Hands-on experience with battery, electrical, controls, networking, or data-acquisition test equipment.
  • Experience working with equipment manufacturers, system integrators, engineering firms, laboratories, construction teams, or operations personnel.
  • Experience using engineering requirements, issue-tracking, document-control, or configuration-management tools.
  • 2D / 3D CAD program experience

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to systems engineering activities for BESS products from requirements definition through deployment and operation.
  • Develop and maintain assigned system requirements, interface control documents (ICDs), specifications, compliance matrices, and other integration documentation.
  • Support integration of energy storage, power conversion systems (PCS), safety systems, controls, communications, and related balance-of-system components.
  • Review electrical and controls designs, schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical submittals; document findings and coordinate resolution with responsible parties.
  • Apply relevant BESS codes, standards, and project requirements with guidance from senior engineers and subject matter experts.
  • Support prototype builds, design verification, certification testing, manufacturing transition, and system-level validation activities.
  • Analyze test and field data, document results, and recommend practical engineering actions within the assigned scope.
  • Contribute to lessons learned, standards work, RCAs, design tools, and continuous improvement of BESS design and integration practices.
  • Perform vendor evaluations for BESS BOS component suppliers.
  • Provide engineering support for integration of BESS products into utility-scale projects under the direction of a senior technical lead.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, communications, and system-level issues using structured problem-solving methods.
  • Participate in root cause analyses, corrective actions, and preventive actions for testing, manufacturing, commissioning, or field issues.
  • Coordinate with project engineering, commissioning, operations, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, integrators, and other stakeholders to resolve defined technical issues.
  • Support permitting and local jurisdiction discussions by preparing technical information and responding to assigned questions.
  • Identify integration risks, maintain action tracking, and communicate technical status, decisions, and open items clearly.
  • Develop technical guidance, work instructions, presentations, and training materials related to BESS integration, permitting, safety, and emergency response.
  • Travel to factories, laboratories, and project sites to support inspections, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical reviews.
