Solution Engineer - Structural Design

Neara
$140,000 - $170,000Remote

About The Position

Neara is creating a reality where power grids can be stress-tested against extreme weather before it happens, using advanced machine learning to build engineering-grade, physics-enabled digital twins of electricity grids. This technology helps asset owners understand challenges and implement solutions across millions of kilometers of infrastructure, optimizing investments and building a more resilient energy future. The team is composed of individuals passionate about making a real-world impact with AI and machine learning, fostering a culture of innovation where everyone owns the mission. Neara is seeking a Solutions Engineer to define and grow the Design function within its go-to-market organization. This role is for an experienced utility design professional ready to leverage their expertise on a platform that is transforming utility network design, maintenance, and hardening. The position is within the Sales team but acts as a liaison between Product, Marketing, and Sales, influencing product direction, shaping resonant messaging, creating technically sound sales presentations, and serving as a technical subject matter expert in customer interactions. The individual will become an expert user of Neara, including AutoDesign, and represent this capability externally. This role is ideal for someone who has hands-on design experience and seeks to multiply their impact by helping to define a new function within the company.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a Designer, Estimator, or equivalent role producing distribution and/or transmission designs at a utility, EPC, or utility engineering services firm, including experience with pole loading and sag-tension analysis, clearance and NESC compliance, bill-of-materials development, and work order management.
  • 3–5 years working at or directly embedded with an electric utility, with a clear understanding of how design work flows through standards, construction, operations, and asset management functions.
  • Proficiency in at least one industry design tool (PLS-CADD, SpidaCalc, OCalc, Pole Foreman, or AutoCAD) and a working understanding of others.
  • Familiarity with utility CAD/GIS environments.
  • Aptitude for code: ability to automate work, write macros, and comfortably read/modify scripts (Python, VBA, or similar), with a desire to deepen this skill.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to executives and business cases to designers, and adapt communication style as needed.
  • Credibility with utility practitioners, demonstrated by experience in design reviews.
  • Curiosity and adaptability, with enthusiasm for learning new software and shaping a function.
  • Comfort with cross-functional work across Sales, Product, and Marketing.
  • Willingness to travel domestically to customer sites and industry events as needed (estimated 20–30%).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with digital twin platforms, Neara, or similar physics-based modeling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop deep proficiency with the Neara software platform, including AutoDesign, to demonstrate, teach, and apply it credibly to utility design, engineering, and operations audiences.
  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert in customer conversations, discovery calls, demos, and proof-of-value engagements, leveraging firsthand utility design experience to build credibility and trust.
  • Partner with Sales to create and deliver technical presentations, demo scripts, and customer-facing materials that translate Neara's capabilities into the language and workflows of utility practitioners.
  • Partner with Marketing to shape messaging, positioning, and content (one-pagers, technical briefs, case studies, webinars) that resonates with designers, estimators, standards engineers, and their leaders.
  • Partner with Product to channel the voice of the utility designer into the roadmap, identifying workflow friction, validating solutions, and prioritizing based on real-world work processes.
  • Map Neara's capabilities against incumbent tooling (PLS-CADD, SpidaCalc, OCalc, Pole Foreman) and adjacent platforms (Bentley, AutoCAD, other digital twin providers) to articulate clear differentiation.
  • Build the necessary resources and materials—playbooks, technical FAQs, objection handling, competitive teardowns—to enable the Design function to scale.
  • Engage directly with utility stakeholders, from individual designers to VPs, adapting communication style while maintaining technical precision.
  • Travel domestically to customer sites and industry events as needed (estimated 20–30%).

Benefits

  • Competitive salary + ESOP
  • Significant career development and growth opportunities, including the chance to help define and ultimately grow a function.
  • Highly meritocratic, non-bureaucratic, and low ego work culture.
  • The opportunity to work on complex, meaningful products and real-world problems.
  • The opportunity to play a direct, critical role in the trajectory of a high-growth company.
  • Fully remote within the United States.
