Solution Architect, AMI & Utility Technology

E Source
$160,000 - $200,000Remote

About The Position

At E Source, we help utilities make sense of complexity in a rapidly changing landscape, and we're looking for a Solution Architect to help shape how that impact shows up in the world. E Source is a research, data/analytics, and technology focused professional services firm focused exclusively on the utility industry in the US and Canada. We help utilities target and serve their customers more effectively, enhance and optimize their grid, and leverage operating best practices and technologies to manage their business more effectively. Headquartered in Texas, we have 450+ employees across the US and Canada. Learn more at www.esource.com As a Solution Architect, you'll provide senior technical leadership across complex AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) and utility technology initiatives. You'll work with utility business, IT, and OT (operational technology) teams to define current- and future-state architectures, identify integration requirements and dependencies, guide solution design, and provide technical oversight throughout implementation. In addition to solution architecture and systems integration, you'll provide leadership across technical implementation activities such as requirements management, system testing, data management, and data quality — directing technical consultants supporting these workstreams, and contributing hands-on when project needs require.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience in utility solution architecture, systems engineering, systems integration, or a closely related technical role.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or supporting complex technology solutions for electric, gas, or water utilities; AMI implementation experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of utility enterprise and operational systems such as AMI, MDMS, CIS, GIS, work management, asset management, outage management, customer platforms, and analytics.
  • Experience developing system context diagrams, solution architectures, integration models, interface designs, data flows, and technology roadmaps.
  • Hands-on experience with utility technology testing and data management, including test planning, requirements traceability, defect management, and data validation and reconciliation.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Are skilled at translating business processes and functional requirements into technical architecture, integration requirements, and practical implementation approaches.
  • Communicate effectively with utility IT and OT organizations, software vendors, system integrators, and consulting teams.
  • Can evaluate vendor technical designs, identify gaps and risks, and communicate practical recommendations to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Are comfortable providing senior technical direction while also performing detailed technical work when project needs require.
  • Bring strong facilitation, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and can manage multiple priorities across several concurrent client engagements.

Nice To Haves

  • Have experience with electric, gas, and water utilities across multiple AMI implementation phases.
  • Have deep familiarity with systems integration concepts, APIs, interfaces, data exchanges, integration patterns, and enterprise architecture principles.
  • Have experience with utility technology testing, including test strategy and planning, requirements traceability, and defect management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of current-state and future-state solution architectures for AMI and related utility technology initiatives.
  • Develop system context diagrams, component diagrams, logical and physical architectures, integration models, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Translate business processes, functional requirements, data requirements, automation objectives, and implementation constraints into practical solution designs.
  • Identify and define integration requirements across AMI, meter data management systems (MDMS), CIS, GIS, work management, asset management, outage management, customer platforms, analytics, and other utility systems.
  • Facilitate architecture, system configuration, integration, and design workshops with utility stakeholders, vendors, and project teams.
  • Evaluate vendor solution designs and technical approaches for alignment with requirements, reference architecture, scalability, interoperability, and long-term supportability.
  • Provide technical oversight throughout design, build, integration, testing, deployment, and transition to operations to help ensure the implemented solution remains aligned with the approved architecture and requirements.
  • Lead and oversee project testing and data management activities, including directing and mentoring technical consultants supporting test planning and execution, requirements traceability, defect management, data validation, data quality, and issue resolution.
  • Support requirements management and traceability by connecting business and technical requirements to solution design, vendor deliverables, test cases, and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform hands-on testing and data management activities when project needs require, including test planning and case development, requirements traceability, defect and root-cause analysis, data validation and reconciliation, exception analysis, and implementation support.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, gaps, and design or data issues, and work with client, vendor, and project teams to develop practical resolutions.
  • Contribute to technology roadmaps, implementation strategies, technical deliverables, client recommendations, proposals, and E Source solution-architecture methods and tools.
