About The Position

Solid Waste Technician II at Mecklenburg County, working with the Land Use and Environmental Service Agency (LUESA). This role is customer-focused and involves guiding customers at the William Davie Recycling Center, maintaining the cleanliness of the grounds, and tracking material drop-offs. The position requires customer service experience, basic computer skills, and involves working outdoors. The Solid Waste Technician monitors incoming materials at solid waste centers or landfills for safe acceptance and disposal, performs manual labor, ensures safety procedures are followed, and processes waste, including household hazardous wastes. The role also involves operating light equipment like skid-steer loaders, backhoes, and riding mowers, and direct customer interaction.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted
  • May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • May require county Driving Privileges
  • May require Powered Truck Certification (Forklift)
  • Basic computer skills are desired.
  • Basic understanding of applicable computer programs.
  • Familiarity using two way radios, smart phones and electronic equipment

Responsibilities

  • Monitors incoming materials at solid waste centers for the safe acceptance and disposal of the incoming items at assigned solid waste centers or landfill.
  • Performs manual labor and ensuring safety procedures are followed at solid waste centers or landfill to process waste related materials, including accepting and processing household hazardous wastes.
  • Operates light equipment such as skid-steer loaders, backhoes and riding mowers.
  • Directs traffic flow of vehicles entering solid waste acceptance centers to the proper area to unload.
  • Assures that refuse remains in the area is not hauled away as salvage.
  • Performs vehicle load inspections and monitors incoming loads for unacceptable materials.
  • Keeps work area clean and free of debris to prevent damage to incoming vehicles.
  • Assists with evaluating solid waste at solid waste centers or landfill for acceptability or correct location.
  • Assists with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools.
  • May load and unload heavy material from trucks and vans using forklifts or manual methods when applicable.
  • Moves and aids in moving furniture or equipment and large and bulky objects.
  • Performs general grounds keeping such as picking up trash and debris.
  • Monitors the safety of at job site with consideration of customers and co-workers.
  • May operate non-CDL required vehicles as needed.
