About The Position

Under immediate supervision, perform a variety of tasks providing unskilled or semi-skilled tasks supporting the collection and disposal of solid waste or other work in support of operations and delivery of City services. This role involves performing general or specific semi-skilled or unskilled manual labor. The position may involve collecting solid waste materials for disposal, reuse, and recycling, container management, and property clean-up. Responsibilities include riding on the back of a garbage or recycling collection truck to collect materials on a designated route, lifting bins by hand and emptying them into the truck, or operating a crane to lift bins. The worker will operate packer machinery on the vehicle to pack refuse and direct the driver when pulling out in traffic and backing up various types of vehicles including garbage or recycling collection trucks, stake bed, roll-off, pick-up trucks, and heavy equipment. The role requires utilizing tools, materials, equipment, instruments, or supplies associated with the area of assignment. Additional duties may include directing and assisting landfill customers to proper dumping areas, sorting recyclables, distributing informational pamphlets, assembling and distributing waste/recycling containers, cleaning windblown trash from roadsides and within a two-mile radius of the public landfill, cleaning vehicle interiors and exteriors, collecting and lifting dead animals for disposal, reading maps and planning routes, identifying and performing basic service and repair work, preparing and presenting daily documentation logs, work orders, and reports, and performing manual labor as required. The worker will operate in crews or independently and perform duties of other personnel as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences.

Requirements

One (1) year of general work experience.
Some positions may require a Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or Commercial Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.

Responsibilities

Directs driver when pulling out in traffic and backing up garbage or recycling collection truck, stake bed, roll-off, pick-up trucks and heavy equipment.
Utilize tools, materials, equipment, instruments or supplies associated with the area of assignment.
Direct and assist landfill customers to proper dumping areas.
Sort recyclables.
Distribute informational pamphlets to departments, customers and the public.
Assemble and distribute waste/recycling containers.
Clean windblown trash from along roadsides and within a two-mile radius of public landfill.
Clean vehicle interiors and exteriors.
Collect and lift dead animals for disposal purposes.
Read maps and plan routes throughout the City.
Identify and/or perform basic service and repair work.
Prepare and present daily documentation logs, work orders and reports, as assigned.
Perform manual labor as required by work assignment.
Work in crews or work independently when assigned to do so.
Perform duties of other personnel as necessary to provide continuity of operations during absences.
