About The Position

Performs technical office and field inspection work in the enforcement of the City's refuse and recycling ordinances. Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $32.58 per hour.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in the handling of refuse, recycling and/or hazardous material.
  • Public interface (both in person and over the telephone) experience required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Arizona driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date.
  • At minimum, a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire or promotion date.
  • As a condition of continued employment, an individual of this classification must maintain a valid Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements and will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as required by law.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

Nice To Haves

  • 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification within six (6) months of promotion or hire and maintained throughout tenure.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
  • Qualifies for a DOT Medical Certification Card on a regular basis as determined by the authorizing DOT physician as appropriate to the job assignment.
  • Inspects alleys and trash containers for compliance with health regulations; tags containers for violations and notifies businesses or residents of violation verbally or in writing.
  • Drives a motor vehicle to worksites and enforces the City's solid waste codes and ordinance by inspecting sites, containers and structures to determine compliance; communicates violations to persons responsible and follows up to ensure that necessary corrections are made; prepares reports regarding enforcement problems.
  • Educates diverse groups of people by explaining solid waste refuse and recycling policies and procedures; creates and revises brochures and booklets regarding services provided; makes presentations about solid waste and environmental awareness to businesses, schools and associations.
  • Prepares statistical reports on container usage, community participation in recycling, enforcement problems and private hauler usage.
  • Attends meetings with Federal, State and County agencies regarding regulations of environmental, refuse and recycling material.
  • Assists managers with call-ins and requests for public contact, from calls generated by Equipment Operators.
  • Operates the refuse collection truck safely and effectively for the section to which assigned.
