About The Position

This position involves operating heavy-duty equipment for landfill operations, including excavating, covering, and compacting refuse, as well as maintaining roads and transporting materials. The role requires performing routine inspections, minor repairs, and general upkeep of equipment and the work site. It also includes manual labor tasks such as digging trenches, moving tires and drums, and directing traffic. The position may involve leading a small crew and operating other equipment on a relief basis.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics and one or more types of heavy equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment.
  • Skilled in the operation and servicing of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and skillfully in and around traffic, construction sites, and work areas.
  • Ability to make minor operating adjustments and repairs and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to lead a small work crew.
  • Ability to read and write and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires heavy physical work.
  • Constantly sees, hears, sits, walks, stands, climbs, operates heavy equipment and small hand tools.
  • Frequently stoops, bends, twists body, lifts, carries, pushes, and pulls objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • High School graduation or equivalent preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Other state valid Driver's License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered.
  • Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver's license.
  • Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.

Nice To Haves

  • Emphasis placed on the operation and servicing of bulldozers, compactors and excavators preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in the operation and servicing of designated equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy duty equipment such as track-hoe, gradall, road grader maintainer, bulldozer, DJB dump truck, compactor, track-dozer, dragline or herbicide distributor.
  • Performs tasks including excavating, covering and compacting landfill refuse, backfilling excavations, blading and grading roads and streets, and transporting material and equipment.
  • Washes, inspects, services, and makes minor repairs to equipment, reporting any malfunctions.
  • Climbs on and off heavy equipment.
  • Steam cleans hydraulic oil off of equipment and cleans all track equipment with shovels.
  • Washes and services small pickup trucks.
  • Walks around the yard to and from the office and various work sites, including walking up and down slopes.
  • Mows lawn, picks up paper, and cleans debris from the yard, ditches, and windscreen.
  • Digs out pipes and makes trenches to allow proper drainage.
  • Moves and stacks piles of discarded tires.
  • Moves 50-gallon drums of motor oil and hydraulic fluid.
  • Locates grade markers on the Landfill yard.
  • Rolls up fire hose.
  • Removes any improper discarded items from the yard (e.g., paint, batteries).
  • Flags and directs traffic for extended periods.
  • Constructs fences/posts around the perimeter of the working face.
  • Exercises extreme caution in equipment operation.
  • Performs manual labor as needed.
  • May plan and direct daily work activities of a small crew.
  • May operate other types of equipment on a relief basis.
  • Performs other duties as required.
