About The Position

Under the supervision of a Route Supervisor and/or Service Coordinator, the Solid Waste Equipment Operator operates assigned solid waste trucks and equipment. Assignments may include side loaders, front loaders, roll-off trucks, brush trucks, rear loaders, knuckle booms, or other equipment as needed. The operator may also be indirectly responsible for up to two people assigned by the route supervisor. The position operates year-round in varied weather and traffic conditions, and equipment assignments may change to support efficient department operations. Salary is $19.00 per hour.

Requirements

• High school diploma and/or GED.
• Valid Texas commercial driver’s license, Class A or Class B.
• Ability to read maps, route printouts, or instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers.
• Basic understanding of hydraulic controls on solid waste trucks and equipment.
• Ability to operate equipment year-round in varied weather and traffic conditions.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods while operating equipment; occasionally lift at least 25 pounds, pull at least 94 pounds, and throw materials overhead into a truck; and climb in and out of a truck’s side door to clean the compactor area.
• Regular and punctual attendance.

Responsibilities

• Operate solid waste equipment on assigned routes, including automated collection and processing of solid waste.
• Drive in traffic and maneuver or back equipment in narrow alleys and streets as required.
• Transport collected solid waste to a transfer station and/or landfill for unloading.
• Inspect, wash, clean, and perform assigned minor repairs on equipment.
• Complete equipment inspections and inspection reports.
• Complete daily task reports and report unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
• Learn at least three different routes within a specified amount of time.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers and maintain regular, punctual attendance.
