About The Position

Under basic supervision, operates specialized trucks and heavy motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions at Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department (PWD); operates vehicles, equipment, and tools in compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
• 2 year's work experience operating heavy equipment, preferably with the City of Odessa OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and capabilities of heavy power-driven equipment.
• Knowledge of safety policies and standards, and safe driving practices in public streets.
• Skill in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, vehicle inspection procedures, and making minor adjustments to operating controls.
• Skill in following standard operating and safety procedures and verbal and written instructions.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
• Texas State Commercial Driver's License Class B is required.
• Special vehicle training and licensing may be required.

Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of machinery to move and transfer solid waste, refuse, and discarded materials; operates specialized vehicles for collection and emptying of trash containers.
• Maintains and cleans equipment and reports mechanical defects and vehicle maintenance needs.
• Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports problems and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
• Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
