About The Position

Under general supervision, the incumbent must exercise reasonable initiatives and independent judgment in ensuring that timely, efficient, and effective services are provided to departments, selecting work methods, and performing assigned tasks. Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussion, and results obtained. This position is responsible for work involving the operation of all vehicles in the Solid Waste Department.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of solid waste collection and delivery equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Knowledge of hazards of operation and of appropriate safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently in the performance of regular duties.
  • Ability to read, understand and implement instructions.
  • Ability to maintain detailed, written records.
  • Ability to use City radio, routing maps, shovels, rakes and brooms.
  • Graduation from high school or a GED from a properly accredited institution of learning.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the operation of commercial vehicles requiring a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B license.
  • One (1) year experience in the operation of medium and heavy-duty refuse collection equipment or internal training completion and operation of city refuse collection equipment as temporary staffing.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class B commercial driver’s license and must be insurable by the City’s current insurance provider.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required according to the job duties and responsibilities within one (1) year of employment.
  • This position is subject to FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements and DOT-regulated drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion).
  • A valid CDL and compliance with all FMCSA regulations is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates one or more of the following most of the workday on an assigned basis: Rear-end loading refuse trucks, Front-end loading refuse trucks, Automated side-loading refuse trucks, Grappler trucks, Container delivery trucks, Pick-up trucks, some with automated lift gate, Lawn maintenance equipment.
  • May occasionally perform the duties of a Refuse Collector.
  • Washes, cleans and provides pre- and post-trip inspection of assigned equipment.
  • Performs manual labor tasks as assigned, such as general debris clean-up and collection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
